Harris Williams M&A Boot Camp Program 2013, Analyst Class of 2014

Charles Busch joined Harris Williams as an analyst after graduating from Washington & Lee University in 2014 with a BA in Economics and in Mathematics. Here, he shares why he chose Harris Williams and describes his path to becoming a vice president at the firm.

Finding the Right Fit

Coming out of school, Charles looked for a job that was challenging and fast-paced but in a supportive and collegial culture. “I only wanted to work in investment banking if I could do it at a place like Harris Williams, and now I feel fortunate that my first job ended up being the place where I want to spend my career. It checks all the boxes: awesome and hardworking people, collaborative culture, M&A market leadership, and a commitment to career development and growth.”

Building a Career in a Dynamic Industry

Drawn to the breadth and diversity of businesses across the healthcare landscape, Charles joined the firm’s Healthcare & Life Sciences Group, where he continues to build his career. “It’s one of the most dynamic segments of our economy. Over the past seven years in healthcare, I’ve had the opportunity to work with a wide range of companies that all play their own unique roles within the healthcare ecosystem—healthcare companies focused on outsourced services, medical products and devices, provider-based services, and healthcare technology. The list goes on.”

“Through each deal,” Charles adds, “I’ve learned something new about the healthcare industry, the nuances of M&A, and the challenges of running a successful business.”

Advancing Through Mentorship

In addition to robust deal experience across the healthcare landscape, Charles notes the strong culture of mentorship at Harris Williams as one of the most important factors contributing to his success. “From day one as an analyst, I could feel the emphasis placed on teaching the next generation of the firm’s leaders—our senior folks are heavily invested in developing those who are starting to build their careers. The mentorship and growth opportunities that I’ve been afforded are what set me up to succeed as an associate and now as a VP.”

Imparting Advice to Aspiring Analysts

As he reflects on his career path, Charles shares the following advice: “As you start on the path to building a fulfilling career, focus on finding the right group of people with mentors that take a vested interest in your success.”
