Harris Williams & Co. hosted its third annual Women's Leadership Summit earlier this month. The firm hosts the Women's Leadership Summit each year to provide a unique opportunity for first-year MBA and sophomore women to engage with professionals of all levels and help build a foundation for a successful career in the industry. While the firm intentionally limits the number of participants to keep the event intimate, interest in attending the Summit has increased dramatically. Compared to the firm’s first Women’s Leadership Summit in 2015, there was a more than 400% increase in applicants for the 2017 event.
Peggy Roberts, managing partner at The Riverside Company, served as keynote speaker for the event. There was also a panel discussion, skill-building workshops, an interactive case study, and remarks from Ned Valentine, the firm's executive managing director, and Hiter Harris, co-founder and managing director at Harris Williams & Co.
Below are a few key takeaways from the 2017 Women's Leadership Summit:
- Say “yes” to opportunities presented to you while still being mindful not to overextend yourself.
- In this industry, analytical rigor is key.
- Learn how to sell yourself and be prepared with your elevator pitch.
- Building relationships is critical to success. Identify mentors from whom you can learn. The success of the mentor-mentee relationship falls to the mentee.
